Director of Government & Media Relations

Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS) has an immediate opening for a full-time (37.5 hours a week) Director Government & Media Relations located in our Lansing office.  The Director will manage the agency’s overall legislative agenda at the state and federal level, in accordance with the agency mission, values and applicable board policies.  Provide strategic direction and leadership on public policy efforts. Represent MPAS’ position and interest on issues before government agencies, the press and other public entities.

Must possess a bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred, in Political Science or related field.  Five years experience in disability issues. Not less than three years of proven successful experience dealing with governmental entities at the local, state, and/or federal level.

Salary: Depending on Experience, Excellent Benefits.

Advocate


Michigan Protection & Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS) has a full-time (37.5 hours a week) Employment Team Advocate opening in the Lansing office.  The Employment Team provides dispute resolution services to clients of Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Commission for the Blind, Centers for Independent Living, beneficiaries of Social Security and individuals needing assistive technology.

 The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: providing timely investigations and direct advocacy assistance, including information and referral, technical assistance and representation to clients in accordance with agency policy and division priorities; and conducting outreach and training to unserved and underserved populations.  In-state travel required, along with some out-of-state travel.

Must possess a bachelor’s degree in a human services related field and at least two to four years of related human services experience including experience working with disability rights.  Must demonstrate excellent written and oral communication and problem solving skills, including the ability to mediate, negotiate, and work effectively with individuals and groups.  Must be able to work well with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and with a variety of disabilities.  Familiarity with disability policy, systems and resources – most importantly the Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act, assistive technology and the Social Security Administration.

Salary:  Depending on Experience, Excellent Benefits. (Range: $35,000-$38,000)
